Facebook's new tools to help curb harassment

News

On Tuesday, 19th February, Facebook announced about it's new tools to help curb harassment on both Facebook and Messenger. he tools have been created based on feedback both from users and organizations for groups that experience higher levels of harassment online, like women and journalists.

Finally, Facebook is focusing on increasing security features on Facebook that prevent people creating fake accounts, inclusing now looking at various signals like IP addresses. This should help prevent unwanted contact from people an individual has previously blocked for harassment, so that same person can’t create a new account just to add you again.

Ignore feature will also be added to mute a conversation and the sender will not know that you are ignoring their messages. If someone is being harassed, sometimes it is still useful to be able to access messages from the harasser, in order to see if there is any risk of future danger. However, if the harasser sees that messages are being actively read, that can also be risky, and seen as reinforcement or interaction. But now you can mark conversations as 'ignore', and after that you will not receive notifications and also the conversation will be moved to the Filtered Messages.

In the filtered messages, there you can read those messages but the profit it that the sender will not know that you have read those messages. This new feature is currently available only for single chats but will also be available for group chats in future.
